Bully Busting

So What is Bullying?

A lot of young people have a good

idea of what bullying is because they

see it every day! Bullying happens

when someone hurts or scares

another person on purpose and the

person being bullied has a hard time

defending himself or herself. Usually,

bullying happens over and over.

• Teasing people in a mean way

• Spreading bad rumors about people

• Keeping certain people out of a "group"

• Punching, shoving and other acts that hurt people physically

• Getting certain people to "gang up" on others

Bullying also can happen on-line or electronically. Cyber bullying is when children or teens (or even adults) bully each other using the Internet, mobile phones or other cyber technology. This can include:

• Sending mean text, e-mail, or instant messages;

• Posting nasty pictures or messages about others in blogs or on web sites;

• Using someone else's user name to spread rumors or lies about someone.

Effects of Being Bullied

If you've ever heard an adult - or anyone else - say that bullying is "just a fact of life" or "no big deal," you're not alone! Too often, people just don't take bullying seriously - or until the sad and sometimes scary stories are revealed.

• It scares some people so much that they skip school.

• It can lead to huge problems later in life. Children who bully are more likely to get into fights, vandalise property, and drop out of school.

Is Your Child Being Bullied?

Being bullied can feel pretty awful. As parents it’s our responsibility to help our children overcome these challenges. The first thing we need to do is let our kids know that they are not alone. That's right ... there are plenty of kids all over the world who go through the same things they are every day. And, even though you as parents may feel helpless sometimes, there are a lot of things you can do to help your child stop the bullying.

In class kids learn how to handle these situations in a safe and fun environment. The program focuses on teaching kids:

• To recognise bullying behavior and avoid it before it starts

• To understand how a bully thinks

• Learn and practice the skills needed to defuse the situation

• Understand their boundaries and how to defend without resorting to aggressive  behaviour.

Most of the time bullying is verbal. Although physical bullying is what people normally think of, verbal bullying can often times be much more harmful and have negative effects that last a lifetime.

Children who are victims of bullying generally turn inwards. They become afraid to try things and shy away from social activities. This can have a profound effect on their decision making in adult hood and can often stand in the way of their personal success.
